Amazon.com Aimed directly at a mainstream audience, The Patriot qualifies as respectable entertainment, but anyone expecting a definitive drama about the American Revolution should look elsewhere. Rising above the blatant crowd pleasing of Stargate, Independence Day, and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich crafts a marvelous re-creation of South Carolina in the late 1770s (aided immeasurably by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel), and Robert Rodat's screenplay offers the same balance of epic scale and emotional urgency that elevated his earlier script for Saving Private Ryan. Unfortunately, Emmerich embraces clichés and hackneyed melodrama that a more gifted director would have avoided. Instead of attempting a truly great film about the most pivotal years of American history, Emmerich settles for a standard revenge plot with the Revolutionary War as an incidental backdrop. On those terms, the film is engrossing and sufficiently intelligent, especially when militia leader Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) cagily negotiates with British General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) in one of the most rewarding scenes. For the most part, the story concerns Martin's anguished quest for revenge against ruthless redcoat Colonel Tavington (played with snide relish by Jason Isaacs), and the rise to manhood of Martin's eldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), whose battlefield honor exceeds even that of his brutally volatile father. At its best, The Patriot conveys the horror of war among innocent civilians, and the epic battle scenes, while by no means masterful, are graphically intense and impressive. And although Ledger's love interest (Lisa Brenner) is too bland to register much emotion, the focus on family (which frequently relegates the war to background history) provides a suitable vehicle for Gibson, who matches his achievement in Braveheart with an effectively brooding performance. --Jeff Shannon

Replaced damaged DVD with this Blu-ray version August 29, 2010 John E. Horisk (Delaware, a small state just outside of Philadelphia) I suffered a loss by damage to my copy of the DVD version of this film and since I now have a Blu-ray player and a 52-inch screen I decided to replace it with this version.
While the Panasonic Blu-ray player is quite good at upconverting DVD material, its rendering of the Blu-ray material is a substantial qualitative improvement (nothing new about that). My only other Blu-ray is the "Plant Earth" series and "The Patriot" is my only direct comparison of essentially the same material in both DVD and Blu-ray. I will still not routinely replace my DVD's with Blu-ray, but will more strongly consider new purchases in the Blu-ray format.
The "extended cut" (additional 10 minutes or so) is a real enhancement to the production. I am a believer in the movie being as long as needs be to include all the shots that materially add to the story being told. As another reviewer had alluded to, the 'added' material answers implicit questions raised by its omission (and probably should not have been cut to begin with).
Great Movie! August 15, 2010 Sea Pirate 1720 I saw this movie 3 times in the theater. Well the original of course, but was seriously happy when they came out with the extended edition. Nice little tidbits that weren't in the movie before and they put the deleted scenes into the movie, except one, which on the other dvds is called "Heart of a Villian." Can anyone tell me if it isn't in the movie or did I manage to somehow get a bad copy. I'm assuming it's just not in the extended or at least I'm hoping.

a lost oppertunity April 9, 2010 rebelinblue (carterton uk) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
i wont get in to historical accuracy because this is a film for entrtainment puposes and that it accomplishes well enough, the opening scene when the fighting moves across mad max,s er gibsons/martins plantation is quite atmospheric as are all the battle scenes,on the down side i found mel gibsons portrayal of an american hero some what like he was a cross between mad max or indeed any of the characters he plays in his lets face it films that can be described as what women want, yes it gets a bit slushy heroic patriots and evil redcoats which there was but not in such a defined way as shown in the film as im sure there were some heroic redcoats and evil patriots any way i digress,so on the positive side great battle scenes a brilliant bad guy col tavington,a good potrayal of how the war moved in on peoples lives and how war decends in to utter brutality and carried out some times by people who perhaps would not act in such a way normally but i cant help feeling that this film could have been great instead of just ok, a lost oppertunity in fact.
Blu Ray quality just not there March 19, 2010 portkins (ma) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
After reading numerous reviews of the quality of this Blu-ray disc, I bought it on Amazon. I was very disappointed. the movie is grainy. Sure you can say it has the grain from film. Just please tell us in the review. I was expecting a Planet Earth quality. It is hard to get by the graininess since HD shows it even more.
I won't review the movie but I think the DVD may be a better option.
