1 out of 5 stars It's a matter of luck whether you'll get a unit that works   September 1, 2010
Rileycoyotes
Read through the reviews for this product carefully. Don't just read the first few like I did. The large number of bad reviews should be a red flag.

I used my unit three times. The first two it worked fine. The third time it went crazy and told me my roast was done hours before it should have. We prepared the rest of the meal hastily, then started slicing half-raw meat. I tried the probe again in several places and they all said it was done. Then I noticed that at room temperature it was reading about 50F/28C too high. As I write this in my comfortable basement, it claims that it is 116F/47C!

I am still in the process of getting them to send a replacement. They are responsive, although e-mails get answered only about every 3 days.

Many reviewers have noted this false reading problem in the past. I can confirm for you that it is not cleared up as of summer 2010. Buy a different product if reliability is important to you.

1 out of 5 stars Works great the first couple times...but then is completely useless...   August 29, 2010
Jeremy
So I've been doing a lot of grilling this summer and I thought I'd get a thermometer that I can just leave in the meat so I don't have to keep opening up the grill. I saw this one, read the good comments and the bad, and figured I'd give it a try. Most of the negative comments were about the handheld unit not being able to communicate with the base. After researching a little that problem is easily solved by clicking the reset button ON BOTH units. I really wasn't looking for a wireless or even talking model, but I decided to buy it. It worked great the first couple times. Perfect chicken, perfect medium steak, pork was a lil pink still but was close. Then one evening I take it out to use...it starts beeping like crazy as soon as I turn it on. I take a look and it thinks the temperature of my kitchen table is 225 degrees. I turn it off and on many times...reset it many times...always said it was 220+. So basically it's completely useless now. I strongly believe this product is not built well enough to even be sold to consumers. Lots of people have problems with them after it's used a little while...and now I'm one of them. My recommendation is to spend your money elsewhere as this product is a complete waste of money.

2 out of 5 stars Frustrating unit   August 24, 2010
Headdoc (CHattanooga, TN)
Limited consistency. It just does not keep working. In the middle of a cooking project it just fizzles out. The battery life is minimal so even with new batteries it just stops working mid cook. Rather then providing ease of cooking it just builds anxiety about your cook bewcause you have to watch the monitor to make sure it is monitoring. Don't bother.. it's a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!   August 19, 2010

I bought this for my boyfriend, who is quite the grillmaster. I was afraid he wouldn't like it or use it, but he IS using it and LOVES it.

4 out of 5 stars Tenderloin to Perfection...   August 18, 2010
B. Patout (Arlington, VA)
I had a fork that had the temperature settings and it has been useful for the last couple of years. I lost all hope for it when it overcooked a steak. It's working again, but I used that as an excuse to get this item.

I used it the first time to cook two pork tenderloins for a dinner party. I cooked it to 160 degrees and the unit began to beep at me at around 155 saying "It's almost ready."

DISPLAY UNIT
Fun, Clever and Useful. Backlight is great because if you're outside grilling in the dark, it's extremely helpful. Unit has multiple options including temperature ranges and pre programmed settings for particular foods. Built in safety settings so you can only select "Well Done" for Chicken to prevent from undercooking.

PROBE and Wire
Slides right into meat and was easily able to flip meat without it getting in the way or coming out of center.

CLEAN UP
A breeze. Just took a little soap and water to the probe and there was no problem

ADDED BONUS WOULD BE...
a case of some sort to hold everything together. Hard or soft (preferably molded plastic)to hold everything in place.

It gets 4 stars because of the sync issue I had and no case.
The only issue that I had is that it didn't sync up (receiver and display unit), but I just turned the display unit off and back on and it linked up no problem.
