Are Cute Puppies for You?
June 7, 2008

Now that you have decided to get a dog or rather a puppy, the question is what dog breed?
The questions about dog breed can be simplified. First, know your own personality. You will be much happier if your new puppy’s personality is compatible with your own. For an active outgoing person a sedate and laid back puppy can be a downer. Dog breeds like Retrievers or Collies love to run and enjoy being around others.
Size Matters In Dog Breeds
For family friendly puppy that is safe around small children, you need to consider the size. A larger friendly cute puppy may accidentally injure children and the elderly as they play. Territorial dogs like an Akita or a German Shepherd are great guard dogs but will more than likely not be the best play companions for very younger children. Although I have been raised around dogs between 200 to 220 pounds that do not have even names in the dog encyclopedia and they were a lot of fun and gentle, but they were exceptions.
If you have small children or live in a small space, consider small breed puppies. You can keep them indoor most of the time and as long as you provide them lots and lots of love, attention and exercise, you and them will be fine. Smaller breeds include Bichon Frise, Beagle, Boston Terrier, or Pekingese.
Dog Breeds That Don’t Shed
Shedding is a big consideration. I have two Rottweilers and you won’t believe how much they shed. If you don’t have the time to constantly vacuum and you love your house to be hair free all the time, you want to choose a puppy that sheds less. You may not be thinking about “hypoallergenic dog breeds” but shedding issues are especially important if someone in the house hold has allergies to pet dander. In this case go for puppies with short or smooth body hair, like Weimaraner, Greyhound, Great Dane, Pug, and Dachshund.
And of course there is the question of sex. Males are more aggressive in most breeds but not all breeds. When you think about it, in most species the main job of the male is to protect the territory and the members of the group so they are genetically geared to being more aggressive and territorial.

Try, to resist that powerful puppy eye lure and does some research before you jump in. I know by experience that you may start with the intention of checking out some puppies and with the firm resolution that you will look at several breeds and by the end of the day, you have the cutest, the most cuddlable puppy in your arm and don’t even remember or care about your original resolution.
It is better if you do most of your research in finding the new puppy with a clear head, online or in the bookstores and away from the magic of the puppies.
