Schwinn Bicycles History

Sometimes it is easy to forget the contributions a single company makes to progress of an entire industry and in fact to the world. Schwinn bikes is one of these companies and this article is more or less attribute to them. As you read this, remember names such as Lance Armstrong.

Ignaz Schwinn and partner Adolph began the story of Schwinn bicycles over a hundred years ago in Chicago and ever since Schwinn name has been associated with innovation in the world of fitness.

Take a look at few of these landmarks.

In 1896 Schwinn bikes enter the winner circles of the bicycle racing program which Schwinn started. Schwinn bikes enter the winner circles more than any other bike company.

In 1909 Schwinn bikes enter the children’s bicycles market.

In 1933 Schwinn introduces four amazing innovation and gives the off-road bicycles their start. These were balloon tire, Cyclelock® as the solution to bicycle theft problem, and the “Fore-wheel” brake, “Cantilever Frame” , the “Spring Fork.”

In 1949 and 1963 Schwinn Black Phantom® and Sting-Ray® are introduced and the high-rise handlebars and stick shift.

In 1965 Schwinn shows near perfect understanding of the fitness trend and introduced the first in-home exercise bikes.

In 2001 and 2002 Pacific Cycle, Inc buys Schwinn and Direct Focus, Inc that later changes its name to The Nautilus Group, Inc. acquire the assets of Schwinn.

This year, in 2008, Schwinn Fitness provides a wide range of Indoor and outdoor bikes, scooters, recumbent bikes, elliptical machines, three wheel bikes and jogging strollers among other exercise equipments.
